Jenavieve Gan

Jenavieve is an undergraduate student in Environmental Engineering at UBCwith a strong interest in sustainable water treatment technologies and their application in remote and underserved communities. Originally from Indonesia, she is motivated by the potential to develop practical engineering solutions that support safer drinking water access while making use of the natural resources and environmental context of her home country.
Under the guidance of Patrick Mirindi, Jenavieve has gained hands-on laboratory experience in environmental microbiology and water disinfection research. Her work includes microbial culturing, double agar layer plaque assays, centrifugation, autoclaving, sterile technique, and preparation of microbiological media. Through this experience, she has developed a growing technical foundation in working with microbial systems and evaluating disinfection processes.
Jenavieve is particularly interested in the development of UV-LED disinfection technologies for drinking water treatment. She hopes to contribute to research that improves access to safe, reliable, and energy-efficient water treatment systems, especially in regions where waterborne disease remains an urgent public health concern. In the future, she aims to apply her engineering and laboratory experience to create meaningful environmental and public health impact in Indonesia and beyond.
