Master's research

Her Master’s research focused on developing flexible, cost-effective, and sustainable Perovskite Solar Cells for point-of-use (POU) water treatment systems. She envisioned using these solar cells to power UV disinfection systems to provide clean and safe drinking water to underserved communities in developing economies, where there is limited access to electricity but sunlight is abundant.

Vision

Having grown up and studied in Kenya, Marion got to witness first hand and experience frequent waterborne disease outbreaks, power outages and high cost water treatment technologies. Owing to this, she was inspired to think critically on how her knowledge in Physics could solve these problems for the most affected communities. She resulted to using solar energy to power UV LEDs for POU water disinfection to relieve the burden of over reliance of power from the grid and providing sustainable WASH solutions for these communities. She was awarded the 2024 International Ultraviolet Association scholarship for outstanding research through her dedication to bridging science and real-world challenges. She aspires to delve into research in advancements of UV LEDs for water and surface disinfection in low resource contexts leading to sustainable public health solutions.
